"We are saddened. We're angry. We're upset," said Raphael Johnson, founder of The Detroit 300.
The group is mourning one of their own. The men who hunt down criminals in the city are now searching for a man who gunned down one of them, 39-year-old Marcel Jackson, a married father of six. The security professional was shot outside Pandemonium where he was working as a bouncer early Wednesday morning.
We're told the shooter was in smokey gray Dodge Charger.
"I heard the six shots real plain, just as plain as can be," said Buzz Crozier.
He is a retired police officer that lives nearby. He heard the shots, got into his wheelchair and went down to the club.
"They put him on the gurney," he said. "They worked on him in the ambulance for a while before they left."
His Detroit 300 brothers were cleaning up Jackson's blood Wednesday. He was shot in the back. The bullet exited his neck, piercing an artery and collapsing a lung. He didn't make it.
Colleagues say earlier Jackson had stopped a man from slapping around a woman in the club. Later Jackson was outside. The man was still hanging around and opened fire.
"You killed a great man. You killed a legend, an icon in the City of Detroit, and if you're just half a man, maybe a quarter of a man, you'd do the right thing and turn yourself in," said Johnson.
At the Roberts Riverfront Hotel, the old Omni, the Detroit 300 are taking donations until about 9:00 p.m. Wednesday for Jackson's funeral expenses for his wife and six children ranging in age from five months to 16 years old. They didn't have insurance because Jackson was supposed to start a new job in security at the federal building next month.
The Detroit 300 is asking everyone they've helped to now help the Jackson family.
"Marcel Jackson, his legacy lives on. He will be remembered. We'll make sure of that, but right now we need all the monetary donations that can be made on behalf of his family," Johnson said.
Police are canvassing the area, looking for video and doing whatever they can to try and identify the shooter. They say it is likely that people know his identity and are asking anyone with any information to come forward. Of course, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP and remain anonymous.
If you would like to make a donation, but can't make it to the hotel, contact The Detroit 300 at (313) 826-2040 or (313) 826-8662.
