Obama taps John Kerry to play Romney in debate prep

CHICAGO -- President Barack Obama has tapped another wealthy Massachusetts politician with past White House aspirations to play Mitt Romney in debate rehearsals this fall -- one-time presidential hopeful Sen. John Kerry.

The Washington Post reported Monday that Obama campaign officials and the senator's office confirmed the role Kerry will play in prepping the president for his three debates against Romney.

As the senior senator from Massachusetts, Kerry has extensive knowledge of Romney's record and campaign style from their shared history in Bay State politics, The Post noted.

But Kerry and Romney have more than just their Massachusetts ties in common. Both men have accumulated a vast personal fortune, which political rivals have used to paint them as out of touch with average Americans.

Both men have also been accused of having an aloof manner and stiff campaign style.

And during the Republican primary, Romney was targeted with the "flip-flopper" label that haunted Kerry during his unsuccessful campaign against then-President George W. Bush.

Romney's campaign has not yet revealed if it will pick an Obama stand-in for its own mock debates or who that person will be.
