MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -
Before he could settle into his office on the first official day on the job, new University of Minnesota athletics director Norwood Teague was already answering questions about the status of negotiations with basketball coach Tubby Smith.
"I think it's in the 11th hour," Teague said.
Smith has two years left on his current contract – a prime time for college coaches for an extension, arguing they need to give recruits the security and stability of a four-year commitment.
Teague was greeted by the media Monday morning outside the Bierman Athletic Complex. June 18 marks the official start of his tenure, with high hopes in the wake of the championship-thin Joel Maturi era.
