How to get a refund on a non-refundable ticket

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The airlines have numerous fees these days: a checked bag fee, a blanket fee, a snack fee. It all adds up. However, wouldn't it be nice to get some of those fees back?

You found a great deal and booked a flight on a non-refundable ticket. However, there are times when life intervenes and you have to miss your flight. Well, all is not lost.

Buried in the ticket cost are fees, like the September 11th Security Fee. According to the Government Accountability Office, you can get that money back because the fees depend on the use of the ticket, not the sale of the ticket. Delta and AirTran Airlines offer four different refunds on canceled flights.

There is a catch to get the refunds. You have to ask for it. The airlines don't offer them up.  How much you get back depends on the price of the ticket.

An AirTran spokesman says you can expect about $30 or $40 back, perhaps more. That adds up if you have a whole family flying.
