The nation honors the stars and stripes on June 14 by waving the flag outside homes and businesses. The first official Flag Day was celebrated in 1877. President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation marking Flag Day on June 14 of every year.

Gen. George Washington and members of the Continental Congress asked upholster Betsy Ross to sew the first American flag in late spring 1776.

The flag, once completed, contained 13 stars arranged in a circle.

A year later, the Continental Congress adopted the design.
