Motorcycle deaths spike in spring of 2012

Posted: Updated:

So far, 2012 has been a tough year for motorcyclists, with 14 deaths so far compared to just five in the same time period for 2011.

The most recent fatality was reported in Vadnais Heights after a 22-year-old White Bear Lake woman who was not wearing a helmet was killed after she hit a piece of tire tread along Interstate 694 by Labore Road. She was thrown from her bike and hit by an SUV.

FOX 9 News spoke with Bill Shaffer, motorcycle safety coordinator with the Department of Public Safety, about what is behind the uptick in accidents and deaths and how riders can stay safe.
