Race-modified Camaro crashes, hits bystander in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Minneapolis police confirm two men were injured when a race-modified Chevy Camaro crashed, critically-injuring the driver and wounding a bystander while a group of people watched.

Phone video captured 44-year-old Jerry Vang, of Woodbury, driving the orange car as it spun out and jumped the curb.

Sgt. Bill Palmer, of the Minneapolis Police Department, said it appears that Vang was "showing off" when the eastbound car left the road near Delano Street and took out a boulevard tree. The car then rolled and Vang was ejected.

Vang's wife told FOX 9 News her husband's ribs were broken in the crash, but he did not suffer any brain injuries.

Investigators said they are unsure whether the car or the tree hit the nearby pedestrian, but he suffered a cut to his leg in the crash.

Both men were taken to HCMC. As of 11 a.m., Vang was listed in critical condition and the bystander was in satisfactory condition.

Fellow street racers who spoke with FOX 9 News on the condition of anonymity said they had never seen someone get hurt before. Now, they plan to sell their cars.

Witnesses and friends of Vang also told FOX 9 News they don't believe he had any intention of racing because his young son was with him. Instead, they believe the people in the second car -- who none of the onlookers knew -- had pressured him into it.
