Paddling sports may not get all the attention other high school sports like football and hockey get, but we have some accomplished athletes right in the metro. M.A. Rosko is live at Long Lake Regional Park in New Brighton, the home water for Rice Lake Boat Club. Sprint Coach Marsh Jones introduces us to a few styles of racing we'll see later this summer at the Olympics: high knee canoe, sprint kayaks and paracanoe. Jones' talented roster of athletes includes:
Danzig "Ziggy" Norberg (Senior, Irondale High School) just raced for the USA at the Paracanoe World Championships in Ponzan, Poland as a member of USA Canoe/Kayak's National Team. Ziggy will be competiing in the 200m sprint kayak class at Worlds. Ziggy is the youngest qualifier ever to go to Worlds for the U.S.
Julia Johnson, (junior, Roseville Area High School) and Sarah Tokos, (sophomore, Irondale High School) were just selected as members of USA Canoe/Kayak's U18 Team for sprint kayak, competing in 200, 500 and 1000m distances at a pair of international regattas in Rideau, Ontario and Lake Placid, New York.
Also, a canoe/kayak paddle camp for kids ages 10-14 starts Monday, June 11 and runs through the 15th. It's $95, 9-11am each morning. For more info:
