Track problems plague Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

The Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix came to a screeching halt late Sunday afternoon amid safety concerns on the track. After crews made repairs, it was decided the race would resume around 7pm for 60 laps. Two cars did spin out when tar strips (used to smooth out portions of the track as it transitions into the turns) failed. They separated from the track's surface. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Fox 2's Ronnie Dahl talked to fans about the trouble on the track.

Belle Isle's 2.07-mile road course had not hosted a race since 2008. Organizers report $100,000 in ticket sales on the first day alone.

Scott Dixon won the Grand Prix. The sprint to the finish was stunted by a caution flag because light rain made the slick track even more slippery. Dixon pulled away after the final restart on lap 55 for his first win of the season.

A mother is pained beyond words.  Her three-year-old daughter was killed in a crash Sunday on Detroit's west side less than a block from her house.  The chaotic scene was visible from her front door.
