On Thursday, Southdale Center unveiled plans for a major overhaul of the mall that includes adding five new stores on top of the renovations that have already begun.
The mall will essentially see a floor-to-ceiling facelift, and there will be a new dining pavilion and play area added near JC Penny.
The mall also plans to add five new stores:
"When this mall is finished it is going to be fantastic," said Edina Mayor Jim Hovland. "It is going to make us competitive I think with the Mall of America."
Other shoppers aren't so sure the new stores will be enough.
"I don't know I don't know if it's going to make it better here or not," said Jenny Osborn. "I like that they are going to update the looks. I think that will help bring in more stores."
Cathleen Connolly remembers when Southdale Center first opened in 1956. She worked at Dayton's in the gift wrap department.
"My dad took pictures of the clothing at Heller's and then my mother would make them for me," said Connolly.
While she doesn't recognize any of the new stores coming to the mall, she hopes they will help.
"It used to be crowded all the time," says Connolly. "I think the Mall of America changed it a little bit."
The renovations and new store openings are expected to be finished by November.
