An 85-year-old motorcyclist was badly hurt after he was run off the road on M-59 Sunday afternoon outside of LaFontaine Nissan in Highland Township. After hitting the curb, the bike hit a car, the driver flew into the air and came crashing down damaging two more cars.
LaFontaine sales manager Jeremie Leach happened to be driving by shortly after it happened.
"The motorcycle was laying up over on the side of the shoulder of the road and there was a helmet laying, some boots, a jacket."
Investigators say the motorcyclist, Ron Abbott of Lake Orion, had been on his way back from brunch in Livingston County when the 21-year-old driver of a Ford Escape veered out of his lane and hit Abbott, who was wearing a helmet. In this case, it may have saved his life.
"He's got head injuries, shoulder injuries, broken ribs, and he's already had one surgery and he's scheduled for a second," said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.
Abbott was taken to McLaren Oakland Hospital in Pontiac in critical condition.
Investigators say the driver of the Escape works two jobs, plays in a band and hadn't had any sleep when he nodded off around 3:30 Sunday afternoon causing the crash.
"Apparently fell asleep at the wheel and the thud of hitting him woke him up," Bouchard explained.
It's a tragic accident, but hopefully a reminder for all of us as drivers to pay attention and be aware of the motorcycles also on the road.
