SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Sometimes when you lead a horse to water, he takes off swimming.
Just ask William, the six-year-old Arabian horse who got spooked during a beach photo shoot Tuesday night, threw off his rider and started swimming straight out to sea for two and a half miles.
KEY News reported William was rescued by the Harbor Patrol and Santa Barbara Coast Guard, which had to secure him to the side of a boat and very slowly bring him back to land.
A veterinarian met him on shore, where William was described as exhausted by his watery jaunt but in good condition.
