CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
On June 8, 2011, 66-year-old William McCann was walking along Kedzie Avenue in Logan Square when he was hit by a vehicle the FBI said was driven by Saul Chavez.
Upon impact, McCann was thrown into the air and onto the hood of the car. Instead of stopping, the FBI says Chavez was observed accelerating his vehicle, running over McCann and dragging his body nearly 300 ft.
Chavez is said to have then exited his vehicle to try to flee on foot, but was apprehended by an off-duty Chicago Police officer. Chavez was charged with death by aggravated DUI, and leaving the scene of an accident.
The charges allege that Chavez's blood alcohol level was 0.29, or nearly four times the legal limit. Chavez had just completed two years on probation for a previous aggravated DUI violation.
Agents said Saul Chavez was in the United States illegally. As a result, when he was booked into Cook County Jail, there was an immigration detainer placed on him, to keep him from being released.
However in November 2011, despite the detainer, Chavez was released from jail after his brother posted bond. It's unknown why the detainer was ignored or overlooked, but it was in place to keep Chavez locked up. Instead he was allowed to leave.
Chavez was last seen in the Chicago area and his last known address was in Chicago, on the northwest side near Wilson and Kedzie. Numerous efforts have failed to locate him, but because this was an area place he was familiar with, the FBI said there's a good possibility that is where it will find him.
It hopes someone out knows where he is and will contact the FBI office with information.
Here is a description of what the FBI says Chavez looks like:
Male white/Hispanic
Five feet six inches tall
About 155 pounds
Black hair and brown eyes
Light complexion
If you have any information about Saul Chavez's whereabouts, please call police.
