St. Paul police shoot black bear on Lafond Avenue

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

St. Paul police were called to the 500 Block of Charles Ave at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday after receiving reports of a black bear in the area, and they shot it after tracking it to Lafond Avenue, where it had climbed a tree.

Officers saw the black bear and tracked it to the 500 Block of Lafond Ave where the bear climbed a tree. Police established a perimeter, and the DNR advised officers to shoot and kill the bear.

Police say the bear was shot out of concern for community safety because they worried that if the bear woke up after being tranquilized, it would pose a risk to the neighborhood and officers.

Police waited about an hour for the bear to come down from the tree before they shot and killed it with a rifle around 1:30 a.m.

DNR workers recovered the bear carcass from the scene. No one was injured during the incident.

No estimate was given on the size, weight or age of the bear.
