House to Vote on School Vouchers

The Illinois House is expected to vote Wednesday on a school voucher bill that would give some parents a choice on where they send their kids to school.

Supporters were hoping the bill would be called for a vote on Tuesday, but Speaker Mike Madigan didn't call the bill.  They were hopeful the vote would come on Wednesday.

It would apply to about 22,000 kids, from kindergarten through eighth grade, in Chicago's most overcrowded and poorest neighborhoods.

Parents would get up to $3,700 in vouchers to help pay for tuition at a participating school of their choice.

The measure has already passed the Senate, and if the House approves, the program would start next year.
