CPS Student Test Scores Improving

While Chicago Public Schools face cutbacks and layoffs, there is some good news; Mayor Daley announced Wednesday an overall improvement in the standardized test scores of CPS students.

Scores have been steadily rising since 2002.

Almost 72 percent of students either meet or exceed the current state standards.

The most significant gains are in science, where scores have gone up nearly 4 percent.

The mayor attributed the improvement to the continued focus on teaching.

Despite these improved test scores, the threat of teacher layoffs is still looming as CPS struggles to fill a $1 billion budget deficit.
