Hunger Reaches Even Affluent Neighborhoods

Posted:

We're teaming up with the Greater Chicago Food Depository to help fight hunger this holiday season. Hunger affects all communities, even in our most affluent neighborhoods.

On a Tuesday night at All Saints Episcopal Church in the Ravenswood neighborhood on the North Side, in conjunction with Ravenswood community services, a full hot meal is provided in the Parish Hall.

While in the sanctuary, a food pantry gives away groceries to those in need, an outreach program initiated by the church some 18 years ago.

"We advertised in the neighborhood and two people came and we gave away two bags of groceries. Tonight, sadly, on some level, we may see 300-350 people or more," Church Rector Bonnie Perry said.

Preparing the meals takes work, and here at All Saints, it's a family affair. Some are volunteers, some are church members. Some old and some young, they work side by side pitching in.

There's a vibe there that's unmistakable: There's a strong sense of community, and a welcoming environment where food and fellowship go hand in hand.

"We like to say, and some people think it's kind of corny, people come here to be fed, and that doesn't always mean food." Executive Director Wendy Vasquez said.

Pastor Perry knows many of those who are dining tonight, because they're her neighbors for the most part who just need a little extra help.

"On this block we have million dollar homes and we have people from this block who are coming for bags of groceries. This lack, this need is everywhere," Perry said.
