Despite Sanctuary Offer, Minneapolis Pit Bull Put Down
A metro woman was forced to say goodbye to her dog over the weekend after a judge refused to give the animal another chance despite an offer to keep the dog in a sanctuary.
Debra Peters said her pit bull bit her ex-husband when he tried to hit her. Yet, Minneapolis Animal Care and Control determined the dog would not make a good pet during an evaluation, meaning it would be put down.
Two animal groups hoped the judge would allow a re-evaluation, but the judge declined. One group even offered to put the dog in a sanctuary and never adopt it out, but the city refused that offer as well.
"What does this tell us about other women who are in abusive relationships?" asked Claudia Beckman. "Dogs are our best friends, and they can be protectors."
Putz was scheduled to be put down early on Saturday morning.
