ROSEVILLE, Minn. - A man arrested Thursday in an attempted armed robbery and SWAT situation at Allstate Insurance office in Roseville has been charged.
Michael Kevin Jones, 40, was charged Friday in Ramsey County with felony possession of stolen property, illegal possession of a firearm and attempted aggravated robbery.
According to Roseville police, officers were called to the office building at 1751 County Road B in Roseville around 12:36 p.m. Thursday for a robbery in progress. An employee at Allstate had overheard a man demanding money at the front desk and saying, “I need money. If you do everything I tell you, you won’t get hurt.”
The employee said she couldn't give him money, so Jones asked for her car keys. The employee refused to give up her car, telling Jones he needed to take the bus and directing him to a bus stop on Snelling Avenue.
Roseville police setup a perimeter around the office building and later found Jones behind several parked cars on the west side of Herschel Street, near the building. Jones was was dressed in all black and was wearing sunglasses and a hat that covered his head and face.
Jones told police he was coming from an appointment at an office building next door, but the responding detective was suspicious because Jones was walking through the fresh deep snow between the office complex and the street,
East Metro SWAT and Ramsey County SWAT completed a sweep of the office building and Jones was taken into custody.
Officers recovered a sawed off shotgun and several shotgun shells found in a plastic bag in the snow near a parked car where Jones was arrested. Police believe Jones ditched the bag before his confrontation with police.
If convicted on all charges, Jones faces a total of 35 years in prison and/or $147,500 in fines
