MINNEAPOLIS - Blood donations are down this summer in Minnesota and the American Red Cross says extreme heat may be part of the problem.

The Red Cross says donors with elevated temperatures are temporarily deferred from donating for their safety and that of the patients who may receive their blood. In addition, some appointments were canceled by potential donor who chose to stay inside and out of the extreme heat.

"Summer blood donors can make the difference between an adequate blood supply and a shortage," said Geoff Kaufmann, CEO of the North Central Blood Services Region of the Red Cross. "The Red Cross is currently meeting hospital and patient needs, however, we are concerned that this downward trend in donations could continue."

In an effort to boost donations, the Red Cross is giving away a 2011 Ford Fiesta to one donor. Through Nov. 1, 2010, all donors can register online at www.redcrossracing.com for a chance to win.

Eligible blood and platelet donors of all blood types are asked to make an appointment to donate as soon as possible. Call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (448-3543) or visit www.redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information.

A blood donor card or driver's license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17-years-old (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
