MINNEAPOLIS - Starting Saturday, March 20, bicycles will be allowed on Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Previously, bikes could not be on the road weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The change is possible with the completion of the MARQ2 transportation project, which added dual bus lanes to Marquette Ave. and 2nd Ave., moving express buses off Nicollet Mall.
“I’m thrilled that bikes will now be present on Nicollet Mall 24 hours a day,” Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said. “Minneapolis is already one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country, with more people every day choosing to become their ‘own engine’ in order to improve their health, save some money and do their part to help our environment. Their choices make Minneapolis greener, healthier and more livable for everyone.”
Earlier this week, Metro Transit announced a new, free bus service on Nicollet Mall between Washington Avenue and Grant Street. Read more
