Minn. GM Shops Wait for Closures List

General Motors to notify 1,000 dealers of closures

Published : Friday, 15 May 2009, 7:42 AM CDT

One day after Chrysler announced the closure of 19 dealerships in Minnesota, GM dealerships are expected to learn Friday if they are one of about 1,000 dealers slated to close.

General Motors tells the FOX Business Network UPS will deliver closing letters to an estimated 1,000 dealers Friday afternoon , telling them of plans to close when their contracts expire in the fall of 2010.

There's no indication as to how many Gm dealerships in Minnesota will be on that list. GM has taken $13 billion in federal government loans and does not want to end up in bankruptcy.

Thursday, Chrysler announced the closure of nearly 800 dealerships nationwide.

Bill Mason Chrysler in Excelsior, Minn., one of the country's first Chrysler dealerships, has 11 days to appeal the decision. If they do, they'll find out by June 3 if they'll be able to stay open.

The other Twin Cities dealerships slated to close include Fury in Lake Elmo, Stillwater Motors, plus a Walser and a Denny Hecker location, which are already technically closed.

Paul Walser told the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal the cuts were "fairly small" and the bulk of metro locations are still open. That means people who use these dealerships won't have to travel too far to another Chrysler location for parts and service.
