MINNEAPOLIS - Fox 9 News has learned the name of the man Minneapolis Police shot Friday night after they say he tried to run them over with a stolen car. Police have not released the name, but Fox 9 has learned independently that the man suspected of stealing the car is 42-year-old Steven Kellum.
The shooting happened at the intersection of Chestnut Avenue West and North Cedar Lake Rd. The stolen BMW belonged to the boyfriend of former Twin Cities news anchor Jeannette Trompeter and was stolen from right outside her home.
“I still don’t believe how it happened.” Trompeter told Fox 9 Saturday afternoon. “I just can’t believe it.”
On Friday afternoon, Trompeter's boyfriend had been loading the car in her driveway, getting ready for a going-away party in her honor. He left the BMW running, while walking into the house to get more supplies. That's when the police say the suspect got into the car and drove off.
Trompeter is moving to California this month to begin working at KSBY in San Luis Obispo. Fox 9 caught up with Trompeter at her going-away party later on Friday night. She said it was a surreal experience being on the other side of a big news event. There were a lot of her broadcasting colleagues at the party and she said she found a lot of information about the incident from them.
Police used a tracking device in the BMW to find the suspect. Police say when they tried to pull him over he tried to hit them. Three officers opened fire, hitting Kellum. As of Saturday night, Steven Kellum was listen in critical condition at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis
The three officers involved have been placed on standard paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
Kellum is no stranger to police. He has ten prior convictions dating back 15 years. In 1994 he was convicted of aggravated robbery, and in 1997 he was caught trying to flee from police in a motor vehicle. In 2000 he was convicted of felony theft. In 2008 he was convicted of possessing burglary tools.
Minneapolis Police say it will be releasing more information on the shooting Monday.
