BLOOMINGTON, MInn. - 50,000 helped raise $2.5 million on mother’s day at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure at the Mall of America.

The mother's day tradition seemingly grows bigger and bigger by the year.
Each participant has their own story.

"I’m basically here to show all sorts of young women that breast cancer can affect you," said Laura Buske, breast cancer survivor.

Some were survivors others walked or ran in a loved one's honor. The goal outside the Mall of America was to one day find a cure for breast cancer.

Organizers estimate that $2.5 million was raised on Sunday. Of that money, 75 percent stays in Minnesota to help treat those without insurance or those who are underinsured in their fight against breast cancer.

The rest of the proceeds go to fund breast cancer research. For those who've been a part of this event since its inception nearly two decades ago, the exploding turnout continued to inspire and impress.

More than 100 of the Susan G. Komen races are planned around the globe this year with more than 1.5 million people expected to take part.
