SAINT PAUL, Minn. - St. Paul police have two men in custody after a brutal robbery near the University of St. Thomas late Tuesday night.
According to police, three teenagers, who had been hanging out by the river -- an 18-year-old, and two 17 year olds -- approached a man walking near the corner of Summit Avenue and East Mississippi River Boulevard.
They robbed him of his cell phone, wallet and keys, and then proceeded to beat the man badly.
According to St. Paul police Sergeant Paul Schnell, the men were looking for a fight, "in addition to the robbery motive they were just motivated by a degree of viciousness, just the fact they could."
The victim was taken to the hospital with serious head injuries. One of the suspects was caught by a K9 officer in a nearby backyard, and a second suspect was arrested the next day. Police expect to arrest the third one soon.
Thursday, St. Thomas University issued a crime alert, asking students and staff to be extra careful, and report any suspicious activity.
Most of what was stolen from the victim was recovered. All three of the suspects are from Minneapolis.
