MINNEAPOLIS - It can be a struggle to teach children good manners, but the Kids Good Manners DVD is trying to change that. The DVD is now in about 130 schools across the nation and many more homes.
Ms. Colwell's 4th grade class at St. John's Catholic School has watched it several times. She has noticed the kids are more aware of how they can be polite.
Kids learn manners like how to properly set the table and not chew with their mouth open. They also learn friendliness, playtime manners, and how to share.
Also sportsmanship is taught. If a kid wants to swing they wait patiently for one to be available. Also if your child isn't polite on the phone, it will tell them what to say. It also teaches them how to respond when they get a gift.
"You should keep your napkin on your lap and you should not really brag about yourself and if you make a goal you should always just say nice shot and be nice to people," Fourth grader Gianna Bonello Freund said.
"I've had so many parents, teachers and grandparents say it gets my kids thinking about manners, which is a very important value," Kids Good Manners founder Ira Hackner said.
The DVD also addresses the not so fun subject of picking the nose. It shows kids it's unhealthy and unpleasant to watch in public. The DVD caters to 4 to 11 year olds. There's also a book that caters to even younger kids.
Hackner says an interactive board game is coming out in about a month. You can learn more by going to the website www.kidsgoodmanners.com.
