SAFER Wristband Tracks Vulnerable Individuals

Published : Wednesday, 04 Mar 2009, 8:55 PM CST

There's a new tool that aims to keep vulnerable children and adults close to home. The tracking system acts as an invisible leash, setting off an alarm if an adult or child goes outside of what amounts to an invisible perimeter.

Christine Ogden is a mother of children with autism. Her 10-year-old son Channing will go off without permission and wander. Needing help, she met Mario Cortelezzis, who has a 6-year-old son with autism.

Cortelezzis developed the S.A.F.E.R. program, with it, offering a way to track vulnerable children or adults suffering from dementia at all times.

"You just set the dial, and families know if this individual wonders away from the home, before they are even out of the yard."

The electronic box tracks a signal from a transmitter inside the individual's wristband. A guardian can set the invisible perimeter for short distances, or as far as a mile away.

Never before would Ogden think of taking her children to the park, but the device is portable, and if the kids wander, Ogden can track them down herself.

"It's not going to stop him from running, or my daughter from darting, but at least I'll have a calm mind."

Anyone with a vulnerable adult or child can purchase the invisible perimeter technology.
