MINNEAPOLIS - The FOX 9 investigators found evidence of a serious fire code violation at apartments they first investigated in November. Reporter Trish Van Pilsum spotted the problem when she went back to check on some people who say they got roughed up by a county commissioner. They say it happened after they complained about changes coming to their apartment building in the small town of Dassel, which is west of the Twin Cities.
Those changes began two weeks ago and so far, they haven't been for the better. Residents say they have been concerned since a couple of Meeker County commissioners took control of the board that runs public housing in that county and orchestrated the firing of their popular property manager.
It got so bad that residents accused one of those commissioners of assault.
An investigation by another county cleared the commissioner but a FOX 9 investigation found serious problems with that probe. Since that story, voters put county commissioner Amy Wilde out of office, but she remains on the housing board as does county board chair Wally Strand
So as of the beginning of this month, the old management team was out and neighboring Kandyohi County's housing manger had taken over.
Jill Bengston heads the Kandiyohi County Housing Board. She is now responsible for Meeker County's pubilc housing, among many other duties.
"I can see how it's interpreted that they, that they don't care but I think, there's a new person here and there's a learning curve to overcome," said Bengston.
