MINNEAPOLIS - Elite Cleaners in Minneapolis is helping people who have lost their jobs make a good impression in future interviews by offering free dry cleaning.
Don Chapman inherited Elite Cleaners from his father, but now his business is hurting.
"Dry cleaning and laundry is a luxury item, and with times being as tough as they are, I think that's one of the first things people cut back on with their budgets," says Chapman.
Even while his business is down 40 to 50 percent over the past six months, Chapman is helping the unemployed with $32,000 worth of free dry cleaning for those about to interview for a job.
"First impressions are critical when it comes to the interview process. As an employer myself, it's the first thing you notice. If people look professional they are going to catch your eye over someone who doesn't." Chapman hopes the opportunity will give someone that extra advantage to land a job.
"Dry cleaning is one of the first things that people cut in tight times, and yet his response to losing business is to open up his heart and his business to help those who have lost their jobs completely," says Minneapolis councilmember Gary Schiff.
Chapman is hoping his idea helps others fight back against a troubled economy.
"Hopefully it will be a snowball effect, people will take note and help."
So far, 2,000 vouchers have been printed. The dry cleaning coupons will be distributed by counselors at south Minneapolis centers who work with the city of Minneapolis employment and training program. The counselors will help target coupons to clients already enrolled in services to help them prepare for job interviews.
To be eligible for free dry cleaning, you must be unemployed and be either receiving benefits or undergoing job training.
