Mom Charged in Son’s Murder, Daughter's Attempted Murder

Becht said she gave her children bipolar medicine

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - A 42-year-old woman was charged Friday for the death of her 10-year-old son and attacking on her 11-year-old daughter.

Patricia Ann Becht, 42, was charged with first-degree premeditated murder and attempted first-degree murder for allegedly poisoning two of her children with a drug used to treat mental ilness.

Police responded to a call around 5:30 p.m. Monday of an unconscious child not breathing. The caller was a family member, who was contacted by another relative that multiple previous calls to the home went unanswered.

Micheal Voneath Becht Jr., 10, was found dead at the scene.

Patricia Becht was found in the residence, and taken to United Hospital for medical treatment. Her 11-year-old daughter was also found at the residence, unconscious though breathing. She was taken to Children's Hospital where she receives continued medical attention.

The complaint says the mother told police she gave each child 10 pills of the drug Seroquel, which is commonly used to treat bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

“This is a deeply disturbing crime that has shocked our community,” said Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom. “Our deepest sympathy is extended to the Becht family for their great loss.”

A judge set bail at $1 million without conditions and $750,000 with conditions set by the judge. Becht was court ordered to complete a mental health evaluation which is expected to occur within the next 60 days.

Dakota county Social Services is coordinating care for her two daughters.
