U of M Students Build Energy Efficient Home

Published : Wednesday, 16 Sep 2009, 6:17 PM CDT

Some students at the University of Minnesota are using the sun to their advantage. They're building a one of a kind solar house.

Students from the University are, for the first time, competing in the solar home decathlon.

The objective of the contest is to design, build and manage an energy neutral home. They are trying to spread the idea that you can live in a solar home in Minnesota.

The home is 800 square feet and it is energy efficient, inside and out.

In two weeks, students will take the home apart in seven sections and truck it to Washington DC and rebuild it on the national mall for the competition.

When it's all over, they hope they can sell this house to recoup some of the money to actually enter this competition again.
