A local program is saving the state money by helping seniors stay in their homes. Nokomis Healthy Seniors saved Minnesota nearly one million dollars last year by offering services that kept seniors out of assisted living facilities, according to the Executive Director.

When it comes to health, there's a weekly exercise program catered to seniors.

For 45 minutes they move and get their blood pumping. Plus they can get their feet checked each week.

Volunteers also go to the senior’s house to help do small fix it things around the house like painting, mowing the lawn and fixing stair railings.

They also drive seniors to doctor appointments and more. The program also has a nurse come and check everyone's blood pressure.

For 16 years Herb Nelson has been coming to Nokomis Healthy Seniors. When he first started, the nurse took his blood pressure and he was told to go to the hospital immediately.

He credits the program with saving his life and being there for him.

Nelson says, "These people were willing to give their time and resources to keep an old man like me in my home. That's pretty special, that's pretty special."

Nokomis Healthy Seniors is getting ready for its big fundraiser.
