Last Call for Al's

St. Louis Park bar announces last call

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn- A well known St. Louis Park watering hole will make a last call this weekend. For the final time.

Al's bar on Excelsior is closing after 83 years. The historic landmark opened in 1926 during prohibition. During that time the building was a grocery strore with a speakeasy in the basement. It didn't become a bar until 1935.

This week has been busy with lines out the door most nights filled with familiar faces and some that haven't been seen for a while.

"I've seen some people I haven't seen for forty years," said owner Dave Payne.

Al's has been a home to many who frequented the establishment for that very reason. It simply felt like home.

The bar, which will close after shortened hours Saturday will soon be replaced by an upscale apartment complex.
