Rank-Choice Voting Underway in Mpls

The new way to vote cost about $220,000

Minneapolis voters are choosing their elected officials in a brand new way Tuesday. Ranked-choice voting basically has voters rank their top three choices, one through three.

The city says it will save tax payers money in the long run.

In a small conference room, one last group of election judges is getting one last round of instruction on how to help people with ranked choice voting.

The city's interim Director of Elections Patrick O’Connor also says they've tried their best to educate Minneapolis voters.

Still there is a good chance many wont understand the ranked choice voting.

Here are three things you should know about rank choice voting:

1. If you don't understand what's going on, ask a judge. But basically you just pick your first, second and third choice for the same office.

2. You don't have to pick three candidates. You can just choose just one or two. Your vote will still count.

3. Don’t expect official results for weeks, because all these ballots will be hand counted.

This election will mostly likely be just as expensive or more costly as the old way of doing things with a primary and Election Day vote. The cost is around $220,000.
